CEV President André Meyer opened on Friday morning the annual CEV General Assembly by addressing a very emotional speech to the representatives of 53 national federations as well as to the many illustrious guests – including FIVB President Dr. Ary Graça F°, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, and the CEO of Sport Event Denmark, Lars Lundov – that were also in attendance.

Gdansk, Poland, September 26, 2013. 2013 CEV VELUX Volleyball European Championship - Men. After finishing on top of the charts in Pool B, France could eventually not make the semis of the 2013 CEV VELUX EuroVolley following their defeat on Wednesday evening to 2012 Olympic champions Russia. The “Bleus” did still finish their campaign in fifth place thereby qualifying for the next edition coming up in two years in Bulgaria and Italy.

Gdansk, Poland, September 24, 2013. 2013 CEV VELUX Volleyball European Championship - Men. Bulgaria upset more than 6,000 fans at ERGO Arena in Gdansk as the fourth-ranked side from last year’s Olympics and the 2013 FIVB World League beat hosts Poland in the Playoff round of the 2013 CEV VELUX EuroVolley. Bulgaria stormed back from two sets down to win at the tie-break (22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 26-24, and 18-16) and play Germany in the 1/4 finals in a remake of their clash from this past Saturday in Gdynia. The only 22-year old Grzegorz Bociek, the rising star of Polish Volleyball, ended up scoring 26 points but that was not enough for the local heroes to make it to the next round.

On Tuesday Russia qualified to the 1/4 finals of the 2013 CEV VELUX EuroVolley after routing Slovakia in straight sets (25-20, 25-14, and 25-21) at ERGO Arena in Gdansk. On Wednesday the 2012 Olympic champions will vie for a spot in the semis coming up this weekend in Copenhagen playing France, the winner of prelim Pool B.

Poland’s national team set to compete in the prelims of the VELUX EuroVolley 2013 starting on Friday at ERGO Arena just got some special wishes from their countrywomen who are normally at home in what is the country’s most modern sports venue. “I just hope that our guys will drive the people crazy here at ERGO Arena” says the team captain of Atom Trefl SOPOT, Izabela Belcik only two days before the start of the Championship.
