President of Latvia pays visit to 2018 CEV U22 Beach Volleyball European Championship to witness further success
Jurmala, Latvia, July 31, 2018. Latvia’s Beach Volleyball rising stars could count on a special supporter on Sunday for the final day of the 2018 CEV U22 Beach Volleyball European Championship. Mr Raimonds Vējonis, the current President of Latvia, was indeed among the 1,600 fans rooting for the home teams – and he eventually awarded the gold and silver medal winners from the men’s and women’s competition, respectively. Mihails Samoilovs/Kristaps Smits claimed the top honours from this year’s #EuroBeachVolleyU22 while Anastasija Kravcenoka/Tina Graudina had to settle for the silver medal after losing the ‘grand finale’ to titleholders Nadezda Makroguzova/Svetlana Kholomina of Russia.
Sunday was not the first time Mr Vējonis paid a visit to an international Beach Volleyball competition held on Majori beach. Almost two years ago, the extremely down-to-heart politician had literally walked his way from the Presidential residence in Jurmala to the Baltic Beach Stadium to witness the men’s final of the Jurmala Masters – eventually won by home heroes Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs.

Back in 2015, shortly after his election, the Latvian President had visited two times the U18 European Beach Volleyball Championship held in Riga where Tina Graudina claimed gold together with former partner Paula Neciporuka.
Such high-profile frequent visits show the popularity of Beach Volleyball in Latvia – as well as testify the recognition of the Latvian Volleyball Federation by their national authorities. Latvian Volleyball Federation President Atis Sausnitis and CEV Vice President Maris Pekalis were obviously happy to host Mr Vējonis once more and to share with him another historic moment for the Latvian Volleyball family.
