Organisers of Moscow World Tour event announce plans for Snow Volleyball exhibition featuring world’s Beach Volleyball elite

Thursday 18th of May 2017

Moscow, Russia, May 17, 2017. Beach Volleyball fans in the Russian capital can look forward to the major highlight coming up from May 31 to June 4, 2017 when the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will visit Moscow for the tenth straight season. A press conference took place on Wednesday in Moscow to disclose plans for what promises to be a real Beach Volleyball party, which will include also a Snow Volleyball exhibition featuring some of the world’s best Beach Volleyball players.

Tournament Director Ilya Volodarskiy, the Beach Volleyball Coordinator at the Russian Volleyball Federation, Marina Shcherbakova, the General Manager of the DoubleTree hotel Natalia Gorguraki and Russian Beach Volleyball star Yaroslav Koshkarev did all attend the meeting and addressed the media.

“The FIVB have changed the format of the World Tour and as a result, we now have a three-start event,” Volodarskiy said. “However, this has only changed the amount of prize money at stake which this year stands at US$150,000. Other than that, nothing has changed since the top Beach Volleyball athletes in the world, including the Olympic champions from Rio 2016, will compete in Moscow. The world’s Beach Volleyball elite knows and loves our tournament, and we always receive positive reviews. We are working on the programme for the fans; this year we have changed the schedule and have more ‘night matches’ so that people can come and attend after they finish their duties at work. As always, there will be many competitions, show acts, and the fans will be able to relax with the whole family and enjoy one of the most spectacular and successful Olympic sports,” he continued.

Marina Shcherbakova stressed that Russia will host a number of international Beach Volleyball tournaments in 2017. “On the final days of the World Tour event, a qualifying tournament for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games will take place at Vodniy stadium as well. The Kaliningrad region (and namely the village of Yantarny) has applied to host a CEV Satellite and the CEV U18 European Championships will take place in Kazan at the end of August,” she said.

“It is a great honour for us to host representatives of such a high-level tournament. For the third consecutive year, the DoubleTree by Hilton Moscow - Marina is the official hotel of the World Tour in Moscow. We even sometimes try to pick up something new for ourselves. For example, our fitness coaches offer visitors special exercises and drills they have taken from Volleyball players,” Natalia Gorguraki said.

Yaroslav Koshkarev spoke about the changes to the World Tour calendar. “Of course, for top athletes such changes are an absolute plus. For other teams, reducing the number of matches is not always that good. However, here there are pluses as well - with a good result, you can quickly get to the deciding stages of the competition,” said Koshkarev who will start the event in Moscow from the qualification round together with Ruslan Bykanov.

Volodarskiy also talked about an interesting side event featuring star players from the Moscow World Tour Open. “On May 31, the world’s top Beach Volleyball players – i.e. Olympic champions, runners-up from the Olympics, world champions and some more elite teams will play Snow Volleyball in Moscow. The exhibition will take place at the SnezhKom Ski Centre, which is open all year round. The event is unique, because some Brazilians have never seen snow in their lives so far. It will be a kind of promo for both the Beach Volleyball World Tour and Snow Volleyball in general. After all, at the end of 2016, this new discipline was officially registered in Russia, and Sochi hosted in early April 2017 the first ever Russian Snow Volleyball Championship. So we invite all the fans to come to SnezhKom and enjoy this unique show,” he said.
