Latvian teams catch promising start to Master League
Wednesday 10th of October 2018
Riga, Latvia, October 10, 2018. As many as five Latvian clubs - RTU/Robezsardze, SK JEKABPILS Lusi, OC LIMBAZI/MSG, Biolars/JELGAVA and DAUGAVPILS University – and another six from Estonia – Bigbank TARTU, RAKVERE VK, TalTech, SAAREMAA VK, PÄRNU VK and Selver TALLINN – started on September 29 their journey in the 2018-2019 edition of the Credit24 Master League.
The competition will be lasting for six months with two round robins and play-offs leading to the eventual Final Four, where only the strongest teams will be able to take to the court. This year Lithuanian teams decide to take a break and will most probably come back next year.
This year’s Master League started with some innovations, namely with the introduction of the DataVolley software for all matches while referees and scorers attended pre-season workshops specifically designed to make them familiar with this programme. The detailed statistics made available through the DataVolley software will provide valuable info to determine the best players of the competition at the end of each month awarded by the main sponsor, Credit24.
In a press conference held before the start of the Master League, Latvian Volleyball Federation Vice-President and CEV Vice President Maris Pekalis addressed the media saying that, “I hope that Latvian national team players will use this league as an opportunity to prepare for the European Championship qualifiers scheduled for early January.”
RTU/Robezsardze (pictured above) have won all of their matches so far to claim first place in the current standings of the competition, followed by two more Latvian teams, DAUGAVPILS University and SK JEKABPILS Lusi, who have lost one match each.
