Riga/Jurmala, Latvia, August 15, 2011. The inaugural EEVZA Beach Volleyball tour stopped this past weekend in Jurmala, Latvia, with Evgeny Romashkin and Maksim Khudyakov of Russia eventually coming out on top of the final standings after edging the home guys Haralds Regza and Armands Abolins in the final match (27-25, 21-13).
Regza and Abolins recently claimed silver at the 2011 CEV U20 European Championship in Tel Aviv, Israel, but after a much contended opening set, they could not stop the run of their Russian opponents.
The podium in Jurmala was completed by another Latvian pair, Arturs Kiselevs/Klavs Zalkalns, who beat Estonia’s Maksim Petrov/Valeri Alekseyev in straight sets (21-18, 21-19) always coming from behind for the delight of the local audience.
Latvia’s Beach Volleyball season will come to a close this coming weekend with the finals of the “Zelta Open” running through August 19-21.
